Robert Matheny, a lifelong resident and former Harrison County Sheriff, has announced that he will run for mayor of our suburb to the East. Matheny has been involved in law enforcement since the 1980s. He has worked in various capacities at both the state and local levels. His background includes roles at the Clarksburg Police Department and the National White Collar Crime Center. He also served as Chief of Police in the City of Wheeling.
A 1983 graduate of Bridgeport High School, Matheny went on to complete the West Virginia State Police Academy via Marshall University in 1987. He also attended the FBI National Academy through the University of Virginia.
Current Mayor Andy Lang is wrapping up his second term and cannot seek reelection under the city’s rules. Meanwhile, incumbent city council member Clayton Rice has also entered the race for mayor.
Matheny and his wife Melissa continue to make their home in Bridgeport. He is the father of four—Robert Matheny II (currently serving as Harrison County Sheriff), Joe Matheny, Josh Matheny, and Dominick Matheny. He is also a grandfather to five granddaughters.
The city election is set for June 10.
